Sylhet

Sylhet is Bangladesh's tea country — rolling hillside estates, a freshwater swamp forest found nowhere else in the country, and a border landscape of hills and rivers shared with the Indian state of Meghalaya.

Getting there

From Dhaka, three ways to travel:

  • Flight: about 45 minutes to Osmani International Airport, with several daily departures from Biman Bangladesh, US-Bangla, and NovoAir.
  • Train: roughly 6–6.5 hours direct from Kamalapur or Airport Railway Station. The Parabat Express, Upaban Express, Joyantika Express, and Kalni Express all run this route.
  • Bus: 6–7.5 hours, with frequent daily departures from operators like Hanif, Ena, Green Line, and London Express.

Best time to visit

Winter (November through March) is the most comfortable season for general sightseeing. Ratargul Swamp Forest is the one real exception: it's best explored by boat during monsoon (June–September), when water levels are high enough to navigate deep into the flooded forest. In the dry season, you can only walk through it, which is a noticeably different experience.

What to see

  • Jaflong — about 60 km from Sylhet town (1–1.5 hours by CNG or bus), right on the border with India. Known for its river stones, the Goain and Piyain rivers, and the Khasia hill community who live in the area.
  • Ratargul Swamp Forest — Bangladesh's only freshwater swamp forest, reached via Shringi Bridge and then a small wooden boat.
  • Bisnakandi (also spelled Bichanakandi) — another scenic border-area spot with hills, river, and stones, similar in character to Jaflong but usually quieter.
  • Lalakhal — a river known for its striking blue-green water, popular for a slow boat ride.
  • Malnicherra Tea Estate — about 7 km from the city near the airport road, founded in the mid-19th century and widely regarded as the oldest tea garden in the Indian subcontinent.

Practical notes

Jaflong and Bisnakandi both sit in border areas, so carrying ID and following local guidance from any checkpoints is standard practice. Hiring a reserved CNG or car for the day is the usual way to cover several of these spots in one trip, since public transport between them is limited.
