Getting there
Naogaon is roughly 5 hours by road from Dhaka via the Rajshahi-Naogaon highway, or a similar distance via the Dhaka-Rangpur highway. The nearest airports are in Rajshahi (about 103 km away) and Saidpur (about 91 km away). The nearest railway station is Jamalganj, about 5 km from the site.
Best time to visit
Early morning or late afternoon, just before sunset, is genuinely the best time to visit — the monastery grounds are extensive and mostly unshaded, so midday sun makes the site far less comfortable to explore.
What to see
- The central temple — a stepped, pyramid-shaped structure rising about 20-22 meters from the middle of the monastery courtyard, the centerpiece of the whole complex.
- The monk cells — 177 individual rooms lining the inside of the monastery's outer walls, giving a real sense of scale for how large this community once was.
- The site museum — terracotta plaques and artifacts recovered from the ruins, with a model of the main shrine.
Practical notes
Bring water and sun protection — there's very little shade across the site. Paharpur pairs well with Mahasthangarh in Bogura, about 70 km away, if you want to cover both major archaeological sites in one trip. For visa and entry requirements and general safety guidance, see Practical Info.
