Jashore

Jashore is a western Bangladesh city best known as the birthplace of Michael Madhusudan Dutt, the 19th-century poet widely credited as the father of the Bengali sonnet. It's also the gateway to the Benapole land border crossing with India.

Getting there

Jashore is reached from Dhaka by direct flight in about 40-55 minutes, or by road in roughly 3.5-4 hours since the Padma Bridge opened. Bus and train also cover the route in around 4-5 hours.

Best time to visit

November through February is the most comfortable window for sightseeing.

What to see

  • Michael Madhusudan Dutt Memorial (locally Madhupolli) — the poet's ancestral home in Sagardari village, about 45 km south of the city, now a museum with his manuscripts and belongings. A week-long "Madhu Mela" festival marks his birthday on 25 January each year.
  • Chanchra Shiva Temple — a historic temple within the city.
  • Jashore Collectorate Park — a green space with a pond in the heart of the city, popular for an evening walk.
